30 Years of Expertise in Trusted German Translation Services
The German language is a hugely influential language in European business and is one of our most in-demand languages. German is widely spoken in many European countries, and is an official language in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Belgium and Luxembourg.
There are also sizeable German-speaking communities in neighbouring countries, including Alsace in France, North Bohemia in Czechia, Upper Silesia in Poland, North Schleswig in Denmark, Sopron in Hungary and South Tyrol in Italy.
German is also an official language in one country outside Europe – Namibia. It is one of the most-used languages online and in international trade, especially in engineering and technology, due to the prevalence of the German technology and automotive industries worldwide, which means that it is highly sought-after and the third most widely learnt second language in Europe, after English and French. If your business is looking to engage with customers in Europe, especially in a technological or engineering industry, then translation into German is a vital asset.
At Business Language Services, German has been one of our core specialisms throughout our 30-year history, so we have a wealth of expertise providing translation, interpreting and many other language services involving German.

Regional variation in German
The German language varies substantially across the area in which it is spoken, especially in speech. Spoken Swiss German in particular is very different to the German spoken in Germany (known as ‘High German’), to the extent that German and Swiss speakers often have difficulty understanding one another in conversation.
Even within Germany, there are many regional dialects spoken across the country, so somebody from Munich in the south‑east would speak markedly differently to somebody from Hamburg in the north‑west. As a result, it is essential that German interpreting assignments are completed by a native speaker of the correct regional variant.
On the other hand, while regional written German varies much less than spoken German, there are nonetheless a handful of subtle regional spelling differences, such as the absence of the ‘ß’ letter (‘Esszett’ or ‘sharp s’) in Austria and Switzerland.
Professional German writing also tends to be noticeably more formal compared to English, especially in business letters and marketing copy, so it is very important that this tonal difference is reflected when translating into German.
Country-specific requirements
Translations into German frequently need to comply with various legal and regulatory requirements. For example, Germany is one country where the concept of a ‘sworn’ translator exists.
If a translation into German is needed for the purposes of getting married, studying or other official procedures in Germany, it must be completed by a sufficiently qualified and experienced translator who has been ‘sworn in’ for their specific language combination before a German court. We have a team of sworn German translators and can ensure that your translation meets the requirements of the authority or organisation to which you are submitting it.
Our expert team of project managers and linguists always make sure to fully understand what your project involves and will be able to advise you on any requirements that might apply to your target country or market.
