30 Years of Expertise in Trusted Portuguese Translation Services
Portuguese is a Romance language with around 300 million native speakers. While the Portuguese language originated in Portugal, around two thirds of the world’s native Portuguese speakers today can be found in Brazil. Portuguese is also widely spoken in many African countries: namely Angola, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea; as well as two Asian countries: Macau and Timor-Leste. Portuguese is the fifth most-spoken language worldwide, and the most-spoken language in South America. It is an official language of many multinational organisations, including the European Union, the Southern Common Market (Mercosul), the Union of South American Nations, and the African Union. This makes Portuguese one of the most important languages for businesses and organisations looking to reach a global audience.
At Business Language Services, Portuguese has been one of our core specialisms throughout our 30-year history, so we have a wealth of expertise providing translation, interpreting and many other language services involving Portuguese.

Regional variation in Portuguese
There are two major locales of Portuguese: European and Brazilian. These differ significantly in grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation; however, this difference is almost exclusively apparent in the spoken language. Written Portuguese is almost identical in all areas, with most areas following contemporary European Portuguese conventions. In Brazil, there is much greater difference between the spoken and written language than in Portugal or Africa, mostly due to the significant influence of African and indigenous languages on Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation. Therefore, while it is common for translators to translate to and from both European and Brazilian Portuguese, it is critical that interpreting and voiceover projects involving Portuguese are completed by native speakers of the correct variety. To ensure the best possible quality, all our Portuguese translators and interpreters only ever translate into their native variety.

Country-specific requirements
Translations into Portuguese frequently need to comply with various legal and regulatory requirements.
In Portugal, the concept of a ‘sworn translator’ does not exist, so translations needed for official purposes, such as getting married or for immigration purposes, often need to be notarised in order to be accepted by Portuguese authorities.
In Brazil, there are indeed sworn translators, and this is almost always a minimum requirement for all official translations. The Brazilian authorities also often require notarisation in addition to the original translation being completed by a registered sworn translator based in Brazil.
In Angola and Mozambique, a standard certification attesting to the fact that the translation is complete and accurate is usually sufficient, although some authorities and organisations may also require notarisation. Requirements in other Portuguese-speaking African countries vary from country to country.
Our expert team of project managers and linguists will make sure to fully understand what your project involves and will be able to advise you on any requirements that might apply to your target country.
