Cultural sensitivity is crucial in any translation, due to the numerous linguistic and cultural differences between different languages. When translating into Welsh, one such difference that is frequently mistranslated by AI and machine translation is formality. In Welsh, the word ‘you’ can be translated as either ‘ti’ or ‘chi’ – the former is used in informal contexts and the latter in formal contexts. Without the cultural and contextual insights that only a professional human translator has, AI has no way of knowing which translation is more appropriate in a given situation.
Regional and register variation in Welsh
There are five traditional regional dialects of Welsh:
- Gwyndodeg, spoken in Gwynedd
- Powyseg, spoken in Powys
- Dyfedeg, spoken in Dyfed
- Gwenhwyseg, spoken in Gwent and Morgannwg
- Cymraeg y Wladfa, or Patagonian Welsh, spoken in the Welsh colony of Y Wladfa in Argentina
Although there are differences between these dialects, especially in terms of pronunciation, there are much more significant differences between spoken and written Welsh than between its regional dialects.
Written Welsh tends to be much more grammatically complex, favouring conjugated verb forms over periphrastic (multi-word) verb forms, making less frequent use of pronouns, and using markedly fewer English loanwords compared to spoken Welsh.
