YES campaigners are celebrating in Cardiff and all over Wales today after the Welsh people delivered a clear YES response to the question on giving primary law-making powers to the Welsh Assembly. In practice this means the Assembly will have the right to legislate in the areas under its responsibility without passing through Westminster to ask for the power to do so on a case-by-case basis. 63.5% voted ‘yes’ compared to 36.5% for ‘no’.
As predicted, turnout was low at around 35%.
The referendum result will not lead to tax-raising powers or to powers similar to those of the Scottish Parliament, but according to supporters, decisions affecting the lives of the people in Wales will be quicker and more efficient.
