May’s Linguist of the Month – Lisa Agostini

Educated in Belgium, Venezuela and the UK, Lisa Agostini holds a BA in Spanish and Latin American Studies (with French and Catalan) from the University of Southampton and a Master’s in Technical and Specialised Translation (French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian) from the University of Westminster.

A Qualified Member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting, she specialises in medical and pharmaceutical translation, with a particular interest in bioethics, medtech, cardiology, oncology and pathology. Lisa’s language skills and medical expertise make her an important member of our team.

Her commitment to the translation industry goes far beyond her day job. She has held numerous membership and committee roles for organisations including the Institute of Translation and Interpreting’s Spanish Network and Medical and Pharmaceutical Network, Mediterranean Editors & Translators (MET) and Emerging Translators Network (ETN).

Lisa’s favourite thing about working in translation is decoding, rearranging and playing with words. She says that translation satisfies a yearning to tidy everything up and transpose it into the target language to be read fluently and understood clearly, as if it were written by the original writer. Raised in three countries, it was inevitable that languages would become so solidly embedded in her life. Translation continually reminds her how vast our linguistic world is and how many languages she still wants to learn!

Despite her love of languages, Lisa says she has failed miserably to pass it on to her children. She now speaks English and Spanish to her 4-year-old Cocker Spaniel and he excitedly responds to aquí. A self-confessed tea expert and failed baker, she enjoys plenty of walks across the South Downs and morning yoga. She also enjoys reading literature in translation, more recently Japanese and Korean. Lisa is half Welsh, so feels it’s only fitting to have added Welsh to her Duolingo repertoire. She finds it is the hardest language she has tackled so far!

Congratulations, felicidades, félicitations, auguri, parabéns and llongyfarchiadau, Lisa!
