It’s no secret that Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have helped to put Wrexham, and Wales, on the map. As linguists, the team at Business Language Services is particularly interested in how the Welcome to Wrexham show has helped to promote the Welsh language. We call it the Welcome to Wrexham effect.
The Disney+ series has always been keen to embrace, explain and celebrate the Welsh language, chants, songs and sayings. But the Wrexham effect is felt far beyond Wales.
In series 3 of the show, we meet a group of Wrexham supporters based in Patagonia. Despite never having set foot in Wales, they speak Welsh and fully embrace Welsh culture and customs. The club’s celebrity owners arrange for the supporters to visit Wales for the first time. United Airlines documented this special journey to Wrexham in their documentary, ReUnited. It’s a wonderful and moving example of how language and culture connects people across the world.
We also saw how the club has worked with local schools, Hewlett Packard and multilingual publisher, NABU, to publish Y Ddraig Lwcus, a story designed to inspire generations of young Welsh readers.
We have long been proud of the fact that our services help our customers to communicate on a global scale, and we are passionate about connecting people through language. With this in mind, we recently joined GlobalWelsh, a global community with Wales at its heart. BLS shares the GlobalWelsh vision, which is to connect people with a shared love of Wales, Welsh culture and the Welsh language.
